PSG shocked Barcelona in the last minutes: Luis Enrique returned and won, Mendes stopped Yamal again

Football nights in the Champions League are rarely complete without dramatic plots. But what happened at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona became a real theater of emotions. The Catalans already tasted victory, and their fans celebrated three points, but everything changed in the 90th minute when PSG stunned the hosts with a quick strike.

It was a special meeting for Luis Enrique, his first match against his former club as coach of the Parisians. And it is symbolic that it was he who, returning to the capital of Catalonia, deprived Barcelona of the first points in the Champions League. The Parisians made a comeback and kept the perfect start: two wins in two rounds.

Both teams approached the match with problems. The hosts were missing Garcia, Gavi, Fermin Lopez and Rafinha. The guests are Marquinhos, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia and Douai. Moreover, Neves, who was announced as the base, left the application at the last moment due to injury during the warm-up.

These personnel gaps affected the pattern of the game: Barcelona sought to control the ball more and look for space through quick draws, while PSG competently alternated the middle block of defense with short bursts of high pressure.

The
main individual duel of the evening was again the confrontation between Lamin Yamal and Nuno Mendes. The 16-year-old Barcelona winger led the stands from the first minute – his spectacular feint "under Zidane" garnered a standing ovation, he actively joined in the combinations and brought in partners. But he didn't look so sharp against the Portuguese again. Mendes seemed to be continuing the same story from the final of the League of Nations, where he completely shut down the young talent.

The
visitors took advantage of the first really dangerous moment: after a corner, Zabarny almost opened the scoring, and a little later he took the ball out of an empty net already at his own. But soon Ferran Torres punished the PSG defense — after a great pass from Yamal and a series of wins, he opened the scoring. VAR confirmed the purity of the goal: Hakimi's deep position saved the Catalans from offside.

It seemed like this would give Barca confidence, but Flick's team seemed to slow down and started playing on hold. That's what the owners paid for. At the end of the half, Nuno Mendes made a swift breakthrough, broke through the left flank and assisted Mayula — 1:1.

After the break, Luis Enrique reinforced the attacking flanks by swapping Barcola and Mbye. This tactical move enlivened the game of the guests. Barcola attacked the weakest link in Barcelona's defense, and young Mbye regularly loaded Kunde.

Barca tried to respond with quick attacks. Lewandowski appeared on the field, and soon he brought Yamal into a striking position, but the young winger missed the chance.

Meanwhile, the statistics of the second half were in favor of the French: shots – 9:5, on target – 5:1. The Parisians seized control and began to strangle the opponent in the transitional phases.

The
denouement came at the 90th minute. Barcelona made a cut, Hakimi instantly picked up the ball and gave a perfect pass to Ramos. The Portuguese evaded the defenders, avoided offside and coolly shot past Szczesny. 1:2 — and the Olympic Stadium was plunged into silence.

Flick was beside himself: his team was leading at first, but lost concentration and allowed the opponent to take the victory from under their noses.

For Barcelona, this defeat was an alarming signal: the team knows how to open an account, but has not yet learned how to maintain an advantage against top opponents. For PSG, the victory was a confirmation of the status of one of the favorites of the tournament — despite the personnel losses, Luis Enrique's team demonstrates character and flexibility.

And, perhaps, the main result: Nuno Mendes again left Lamin Yamal in the shadows. The young Spaniard can set the audience on fire, but it was the experience and strength of the PSG defender that played a key role in crucial moments.
